Sunday 5th June. Meet at 2.00pm at Abington Church. Walk Leader: Br. Colman Clagaigh.
This walk celebrates part of our local heritage, the Cistercian monastery of Abbey Owney, which was one of the most important monasteries in Ireland from the 12th to the 17th centuries. The walk will begin with a short history of the monks of Abbey Owney. From there it will continue on to Abington graveyard where glimpses of the architecture and layout of the monastery may still be seen. Afterwards it will go on to nearby sites on the Mulcair river, which the monks used to supply power for their mill, fish for their table and sanitation for the monastery.
